Christmas Grave
Decorations Review
Decorating a cemetery plot for the holidays is
sometimes difficult. Most cemeteries have rules and regulations as to what can
and cannot be used to decorate the plots. There are Christmas grave decorations
appropriate for any grave. Of course you do not want anything flashy but
beautiful and brightly colored can say a lot.
The best Christmas grave decorations are freshly cut greenery. Artificial
greenery tends to fade in the sun and become unsightly after a short period of
time in the weather. Fresh cut spruce and pine retain their color, last much
longer than fake cuttings and will generally be left longer on the grave. If
left until spring, they can simply be mowed over leaving pine smelling mulch
atop the grass.
A common decoration for a grave is called a stone saddle. This is a floral
arrangement that is usually placed on top of the headstone. They may be made
with traditional Christmas greenery and flowers including poinsettia and pine.
You can choose artificial or fresh cut and they can withstand wind and the
elements better than decorations that simply lay on the grave.
Blankets are popular for use on a grave to cover it with Christmas cheer. They
are made of balsam and traditional flowers and can actually have small ornaments
and other decorations added to them. They are more expensive than the average
wreath or stone saddle but provide a large variety of decorations in one item.
Although the most widely used Christmas grave decorations are crosses, there are
many different ideas that can be used. Even a small artificial Christmas tree
may be used and spiked into place so it does not get blown away by winter winds.
The choice is ultimately up to you but you should try to capture the sentiments
of your loved one when choosing what to decorate with.
